Pyramid Volume Calculator

Base × height ÷ 3.

Volume

    How to use

    1. Enter base length and width.
    2. Enter vertical height.
    3. Read volume and base area.

    Formula

Base area is length × width. Volume is that area times the vertical height, divided by 3. A square base is just the case where length and width are equal. The page rounds to four decimal places.

    Worked example

The fields open at length 6, width 6, and height 9. Base area is 36. Volume is 36 × 9 ÷ 3 = 108. The same 108 appears for a 9 by 4 base with height 9, because only the base area and the height enter the formula.

    How to read the result

108 is the space inside the pyramid, in cubic units of the length you typed. It is one third of a box that has the same base and the same height. The number does not include the area of the sloping faces.

    When this does not apply

The base is a rectangle or a square. A triangular base, a pentagon, or a circular base (a cone) uses a different base area. Height must be perpendicular to the base, not the length of a sloping edge. The page does not place the apex off centre.
