    How to use

    1. Choose side or apothem.
    2. Enter the value.
    3. Read area, perimeter, and long diagonal.

    Formula

This is a regular hexagon: six equal sides and equal angles. Area is (3 × √3 ÷ 2) × side². Perimeter is 6 × side. The apothem, the distance from the centre to the middle of a side, is (√3 ÷ 2) × side. The long diagonal, from one vertex through the centre to the opposite vertex, is 2 × side. If you type an apothem, the side is apothem × 2 ÷ √3. Results are rounded to four decimal places.

    Worked example

The field opens at side length 6. Area is 93.5307. Perimeter is 36. Apothem is 5.1962. Long diagonal is 12. The same hexagon is six equilateral triangles of side 6.

    How to read the result

93.5307 is the area inside the outline. 36 is the length of the outline. 12 is the widest vertex-to-vertex distance, not the distance between two opposite flat sides. That flat-to-flat width is 10.3923.

    When this does not apply

The sides must all be equal. A stretched hexagon, or a hexagon with unequal sides, does not use this area. The page does not accept a long diagonal as the known value. Units stay as you typed them.
